Petes Fall to 2-1

PETERBOROUGH, ON - The Peterborough Petes saw their record fall to 2-1 in the young Ontario Hockey League season tonight as they dropped a home ice 5-3 decision to the Western Conference's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

The Petes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jamie Doornbosch and Jeff Braithwaite, and strong play by Jason Missiaen had the Petes go into the dressing room holding that lead after the first period of play.

The second period was all Greyhounds as they scored twice, once early in the period on a slapshot from James Livingston, and once midway through the period on a goal by Brett Thompson.

Both teams had good chances early in the third period with the Greyhounds eventually capitalizing on two goals by Thompson, and one from Nick Cousins to jump out to a 5-2 lead. Jack Walchessen replied for the Petes with a late tally to cut the lead to 5-3 however they could not come any closer, falling to the Greyhounds by the same score.

Thompson snagged first star with his hat trick and Sault Ste. Marie goaltender Robin Lehner had a strong game in net stopping 27 of 30 shots to be named the games 2nd star. The Petes Jason Missiaen earned 3rd star honours stopping 32 of the 36 shots he faced and Ryan Spooner was named the Mark's Work Wearhouse Hardest Working Player of the Game with his strong play at both ends of the ice, and his assist on the Jamie Doornbosch goal.

Next action for the Petes is tomorrow night when they travel to Oshawa to take on the Generals in their season home opener, 7:30 PM at the General Motors Centre. This marks the first of eight meetings in the Canadian Hockey League's greatest rivalry.
